I’ve been posting about the controversial law suit that Thomson Reuters (EndNote makers) have filed against the makers of Zotero here and here.

Ironically, I just received a request from Thomson Reuters to participate in Market Research today. I thought it was worth reminding other academics who might receive this request that Thomson Reuters is behind this lawsuit.

If you have any objections to the EndNote lawsuit (which I think you probably should), keep the above facts in mind when you consider their request.

I urge academics to turn down their request (…and since they contacted you asking for favors, you now have a channel back to the company to voice your concerns. Perhaps you could reply to the email and voice your concerns about the law suit)

Here’s the full copy of the request I received.

Thomson Reuters (formerly Thomson Scientific) invites you to participate in a market research study about new product developments.

The Scientific business of Thomson Reuters is looking for researchers, academic staff and students to participate in a market research study.

We will be conducting an online focus group with those who use ISI Web of Knowledge or Web of Science on a regular basis.  The online group will be two days in length and take place on October 8th & 9th.

An online focus group discussion is a moderated, ongoing Web-based chat, where participants can log on to answer posted questions at their convenience during the two-day study period.  During this time you will be asked about your research behavior and shown a few screen shots of new ideas.  You will also be asked to perform a brief task.  In total it will take approximately two hours of your time.

Those who complete the two-day group will be awarded US $100.00.

If you are an ISI Web of Knowledge or Web of Science user and use the marked list feature please click on SURVEY to answer a few background questions.

Please note: Submitting this survey is not a guarantee of participation.  If you are selected to participate you will receive a confirming email shortly after submitting.

There are a limited number of spots available, so please respond as soon as possible. The survey will close when the group is full.

Thank you in advance. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Maria Pacenza
