UPDATE: I made the switch. It’s awesome.
I’m seriously entertaining the idea of having students submit papers to me by sharing a Google Document rather than my current model. I have 10 reasons why I think this is a good idea. But first let me describe the two models.
My Current Model
I grade papers electronically. Students submit papers to a dropbox. I download them, and then I type comments in the margins. After that, I email them back to the student (or upload them to a course management dropbox).
Google Model
Students would write their paper in Google Docs (or some other Word Processor and paste a copy into a Google Document). Instead of uploading or emailing the paper, they would share the document with me. I’d write my comments/grade directly in the file they’ve shared with me.
Here’s are 10 reasons why I’m thinking about ditching the old electronic submission model in favor of a Google Docs submission model.

UPDATE: Listen to Episode One
I track a bunch of philosophy journals in Google Reader. I was reading through them one day and putting stars next to the papers that looked interesting, but then I had to do something (I think it was cook dinner) and I had to stop reading. During these times, I’ve started listening to NPR podcasts.
I was thinking, it would be really great if someone would create a journal updates podcast. The idea is that they would sift through Google Reader and star everything the way I do, but then they would create a short podcast in which they read through the titles. They could also read through short abstracts, and maybe offer distilled versions of the lengthy/technical abstracts. (more…)

I gave a presentation to faculty and staff today called about Google services. I focused on 5 cool things academics can do with Google Forms. Below is the slide presentation I used for the talk. I’ll be adding You Tube video in the little boxes soon to turn the presentation slides into a narrated presentation. Hopefully, anyone who missed the talk will still be able to get a lot out of the slides below.
UPDATE: I’ve now added the YouTube videos, but the last three videos had weird lighting issues. I’m going to have to re-record videos for those three slides.

It turns out Kent State University has already switched to gmail for their mail services. Now all students and faculty will be able to use a wide range of additional Google Apps services. Story here.
The dominoes are starting to fall. I really hope that SUNY-Fredonia is somewhere next in that domino line.
In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been on a Google Apps kick recently. Here are two of my recent posts on it.
Update: I forgot to mention that Kent State University is where our Vice-President of Academic Affairs completed her Ph.D….That’s why this story struck a chord with me.

I’m playing around with some wordpress plugins. If this works, an audio player should be embedded here with a brief test recording.
Update: Wow. That was painless and easy.

Alright. I’m finally starting to feel better from the wisdom teeth removal, and Thanksgiving break is nearly over.
Blogging will continue soon. I’ve actually been working on a few posts periodically throughout the break.
I also have a couple new idea that I’m going to start incorporating into this site that I’m pretty excited about. More on that soon.
P.S. The Droid phone is freaking awesome. If you’re in the market for a smartphone, I highly recommend it.
